Players can explore the open-world environment of Rome, climb buildings, and use various tools and weapons to assassinate targets. The gameplay features a mix of free-running, stealth, and combat. Along the way, Ezio allies himself with other historical figures such as Leonardo da Vinci, Niccolò Machiavelli, and Caterina Sforza. The game takes place in Rome, Italy, and follows Ezio as he works to rebuild the Assassin Brotherhood and take down the Borgia family, a powerful and corrupt family that has taken control of the city. In this case, he relives the memories of Ezio Auditore da Firenze, an Italian nobleman and master assassin who lived during the Renaissance period. In the game, Desmond uses the Animus, a device that allows him to relive the memories of his ancestors.
The game follows the story of Desmond Miles, a modern-day descendant of a long line of Assassins.
